TO HEAVEN AND BACK – Series I
After over a lac kilometers travelling around the southern part of India, it was time to move out of our comfort zone, rotate the compass and head for a new area of the country. Taking inspiration from numerous travellers who’ve made this journey on their bikes, cars, public transport, some even on their bicycles, yes you heard me right the humble pedal pushing 2 wheeler, we too decided to embark on this sojourn.
P now well into her 90’s or should I say 90000km in motor mileage and having been crowned the undisputed Queen of the South (https://www.pottypadre.com/awesome-threesome-nigel-abigail-and-sweet-pea-go-on-a-honeymoon/), her intent to explore the rest of India would sadly come into an end. She currently spends her days in retirement quietly reminiscing of her days of exploration, showing off to other vehicles when on trips to the market and at the church parking lot.
Carriage less and without wheels we needed something sturdy for our heavenly destination. Ultimately, heaven is a special place, isn’t it? We went on to choose a rugged, rural and rigid carriage. The mighty Mahindra Bolero or B as we christened her would be our loyal companion for this trip. Just the qualities one needs when tackling the terrain that lay ahead of us. She had already proved her resilience with a 2000 km round trip to Mysuru with an engine oil leak that was mind-bogglingly ignored. Hopefully, promising never to leak again .
The journey being long and unfamiliar, meticulous research on the fuel pumps, food courts, rest stops and hotels was the need of the hour. To avoid incidents of fuel adulteration, we decided to refill only at Bharat Petroleum’s company owned company operated pumps or COCO’s as they are fondly called. With B’s tummy taken care off & a much needed service check we shifted the focus on us. Due to food courts being few and far between we carried 2 full sized Goan Bazaar bags that had a mix of homecooked, ready to eat tin food, biscuits and even a foldable cooler to store our refreshments. Just a spoiler alert, those bags came back neatly folded.
And so, with a durable engine, a radio & lots of food we headed Northwards.
